I think that would be letting him off lightly, Heathcliff was always a little off kilter and what happened to him only intensified his sadistic attitude. I do feel sorry for him on some level but he was definitely psychotic

@eeej730 Actually, not really Heathcliff's personality and attitude towards the people around him is as a result of past experiences. Such as Hindley's attitude toward Heathcliff and his treatment of him....also, Catherine's betrayal of him by marrying Edgar...there are other contributing factors which result is his character however you can feel sympathetic toward Heathcliff and understanding of his actions if you consider these factors.
